On July 15, the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) announced the winners of the 2023 International Hydrological Awards at the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics Scientific Conference, Pro. Junguo Liu was awarded the Volker Medal of the International Hydrological Awards, which is the second Chinese winner of this honor since the establishment of the International Hydrological Awards. The Dooge Medal of the 2023 International Prize of Hydrological Sciences was awarded to Professor Aldo Fiori of Italy and Professor Efi Foufoula-Georgiou, a dual Greek-American citizen.
Established in 1979, the International Prize for Hydrological Sciences is the highest academic award in the international hydrological community. The prize is awarded jointly by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Since 2014, the award has been divided into two MEDALS, namely the Dooge Medal and the Volker Medal of the International Hydrological Science Award, both of which are designed to recognize the outstanding achievements of hydrologists, but with different focuses. The Dooge Medal recognizes fundamental contributions to the science of hydrology, while the Volker Medal recognizes scientists who have made outstanding contributions to the use of hydrology for the benefit of society.
The award is a recognition of Professor Liu Junguo's innovative and outstanding contributions to the field of international hydrology.
